If you have a printer problem, the following information should help you to diagnose the fault and in most instances find the most appropriate route to a solution.
Ink-related Issues
Light or missing stripes Ink-related issues may appear as missing stripes of one or more colours on the "Light Stripes Test" page. Print a copy of this page from the menu panel of your printer as follows:
Phaser 850
|
Scroll to "Troubleshooting" Menu, then "Print Diagnostic Pages". To perform a cleaning, select "Eliminate Light Stripes". |
Phaser 860/8200
|
Scroll to "Support" Menu, then "Improve Print Quality", then "Print Diagnostic Pages". To perform a cleaning, select "Eliminate Light Stripes". |
Many print-quality problems can be corrected by performing the cleaning procedures outlined in your Phaser® User Guide. If you do not have a copy for your printer, please see the links below for cleaning procedures. In general, the "Eliminate Light Stripes" procedure (help info, pdf) may be used to restore your printer to full operating condition. The cleaning procedure may need to be repeated 2 or 3 times before the problem is corrected. Sometimes, turning your printer off overnight, then re-running the procedure 1-2 more times may help clear-up a missing inkjet.
Some people have reported success at recovering one or several missing jets by printing one of the pdf files below using the photo-resolution setting on the printer. Print several pages of the affected colour - cyan, magenta, yellow, or black. Remember to specify High-Resolution / Photo Mode before printing.

Ink smears on your paper If you see spots or streaks on your output, perform the "Remove Ink Smears" routine or clean the rollers and wipers with our inexpensive cleaning kit (how-to, pdf).
Colours have shifted or appear "off" If the printer or a particular ink colour have not been used, or used only slightly, over a period of several weeks, the melted ink may change colour due to the high temperatures of the printhead reservoirs. This is especially noticeable in the cyan (prints as a green-blue colour on the light stripes test page) and sometimes in the yellow (prints as a golden brown) and especially affects the Phaser 850 printer. This colour shift may affect all solid inks, regardless of manufacturer. To correct this, the cooked ink must be purged from the ink reservoirs and replaced with new ink. Either perform the eliminate light stripes cleaning several times (described above), or a more economical solution is to print a page of pure cyan or pure yellow using the downloadable pdf documents below. It may require printing 50-60 pages before the colour returns to normal.

Paper Jams
Media jam fault codes have the format of: 22,LSS.TC
- L: indicates location of the jam
- SS: indicates sensor location
- T: indicates whether a timeout or an event occurred
- C: indicates checksum
Jam location codes (L). More specific information is contained in the Service Manual.
1. Bottom high-capacity paper feeder. 2. Middle high-capacity paper feeder. 3. Top standard paper tray. 4. Manual paper feed. 5. Front cover. 6. Top cover. 7. Y-axis jams. 8. Door opened jams.

Fault Codes
Two common fault codes for the Phaser 860 and 8200 printers are 07,005.47: and 15,004.45:
07,005.47: Typically indicates that the lift pins on the maintenance drawer are worn (this is the black tray labeled "A" visible when the front door of the printer is open). When the lift pins are worn, the maintenance roller does not properly oil the print drum before each page is printed. The solution is to replace the maintenance drawer. A temporary solution is to place plastic sleeves over the lift arms.
15,004.45: Typically indicates that one or both of the light bulbs in the drum heater have burned out. See below to order (2) replacement bulbs and installation instructions, and tool sets. A set of TORX screwdrivers is needed to perform this repair (sizes 10, 15, 20). If replacing the bulbs does not correct the problem, the drum heater needs to be replaced.
Most fault codes have the format of: AA,BBB.CC:123. • AA: refers to system • BBB: refers to subsystem • CC: refers to type of problem • 123: is the printer's page count
General fault categories and a brief description of each code are listed below. Please note that the following information is intended to help diagnose problems with your printer. Repairs should only be made by qualified personnel.
- 2,000: System fault I/O board
- 4,000: Process control supervisor
- 5,000: Y-axis task program
- 6,000: X-axis task program
- 7,000: Process motor task program
- 8,000: Cap task program
- 9,000: Ink loader: ink melters and ink-level sensors
- 11,000: Digital motion control (DMC) ASIC library program
- 12,000: Inter-Task communication program
- 13,000: Printhead thermal control task program
Printhead thermal faults are determined by a thermistor in contact with the drum surface. Ensure that there is adequate clearance for airflow (at least 4 inches (10 cm) on all sides) and that the room temperature is between 90oF (35oC) and 50oF (10oC).
Drum thermal faults are determined by a thermistor in contact with the drum surface. Ensure that there is adequate clearance for airflow (at least 4 inches (10 cm) on all sides) and that the room temperature is between 90oF (35oC) and 50oF (10oC).
15,004.45: usually indicates that the lamps in the preheater unit have burned-out.
- 16,000: Preheater thermals
Preheater thermal faults are determined by a thermistor in contact with the preheater. Ensure that there is adequate clearance for airflow (at least 4 inches (10 cm) on all sides) and that the room temperature is below 90oF (35oC).
- 19,000: Printhead calibration program

Maintenance Kits
Maintenance kits consist of a roller assembly and a counter unit. The roller is impregnated with a fluid that coats the surface of the print drum prior to every print. The melted ink is then jetted onto this surface. The counter tracks the number of pages (pixels) printed and also tracks the life span of the kit (15-24 months depending on model). You can check the percentage life remaining of your maintenance kit from the menu panel of your printer ("Supplies Info" menu). The printer will also display a warning message when the kit is nearing the end of its life. If the roller is low or out of fluid, your printed pages will be missing patches of ink (which will be sticking to the print drum).
